What Happens When Grief Turns Love Into Nightmares?

Unravel the Darkness

Negative Images

Anita Walsh, still reeling from her husband’s sudden death, finds herself haunted not only by grief, but his Negative Image, a new phenomenon where the deceased prey on those they loved in life, turning intimate memories into nightmares. This spectral figure uses their shared past as a weapon, systematically dismantling her friendships, career, and self-worth. Desperate for escape, Anita plunges into a quest to sever the ghostly bonds that tie her to her tormentor.

As society grapples with the rising terror of NIs, a charismatic extremist proposes a radical solution to isolate the haunted from the unafflicted, gaining dangerous followers. Anita, alongside another victim of this spectral affliction, must navigate their personal hauntings and societal threats to prevent the breakdown of their community.

With its gripping narrative and eerie exploration of love and betrayal, Negative Images marks Rebecca Schier-Akamelu as a powerful new voice in horror. This novel delves deep into the psychological horrors of grief and the supernatural, making it a must-read for fans of horror and ghost stories alike.

“Gripping from start to finish.”

In search of a good story

Reading has always been one of my passions. I was the kid who brought an extra book to all my classes in school, hoping for some time to read. I still carry a book with me everywhere I go. Horror always intrigued me, and it was even more satisfying when the work included psychological or supernatural elements. Why? There’s something exciting about seeing someone living their life, with everything planned out, only to see it upended by something they could never have seen coming. Horror not only makes people confront their fears; I believe it gives us incredible insight into who someone really is when there’s not a clear blueprint to follow.

Writing was a natural extension for me, although it took years for me to be confident enough to submit my work. (I do not recommend this, by the way. If you’re a writer, please don’t self-reject!) Negative Images is my debut novel, and it’s the first one that I sent out to publishers and agents instead of stuffing in a drawer. I was thrilled when Rising Action Publishing told me they loved it, and I can’t wait for it to be published this July.

When not writing horror, I found myself writing a wide variety of other things: articles, landing pages, UX copy, and even an essay in Chicken Soup for the Soul. I still work with freelance clients and would be happy to connect if you’re interested in working with me. Aside from reading and writing, I enjoy exercising, theatre, and spending time with my family.

"This is psychological horror at its finest. Deeply unsettling, incredibly creative, and completely immersive."

"This book had me hooked from start to finish and had me feeling creeped out in the best possible way. It is so different from anything I have read and brought an amazing twist to the concept of a 'ghost story."

"It played out like a movie in my head. It is dark, disturbing and eerie!"

Avoiding Sneaky passive voice

I’ll be the first to say it: I use passive voice all the time. Thankfully, this is something that typically happens during a first draft, and not something that I ever let anyone else read. When I was younger, I learned that a sentence was passive if you could add the...

Worldbuilding

Horror, sci-fi, and fantasy novels often involve an element of worldbuilding. What’s tricky is incorporating the information that a reader needs in a way that doesn’t detract from the story. No one is interested in paragraph upon paragraph describing the world in the...
